Those are some cool photographs! I do art for a living and use Photoshop every single day. The trick to getting pictures to look like that is to treat it like a painting.

You can use the preset setting for contrast and colors but the only way to get photos to look that striking is to use a Photoshop brush and manually darken and lighten areas. Another trick would be to select smaller portions of your photos and adjust the color so that they intensify and pop more.

Owning a nice digital SLR camera would be nice but they’re $ 600-$ 8,000. If you have a normal digital camera the only thing you really have to worry about is having good lighting. Flash looks horrible in professional photos. If you want an artsy feel you’re going to have to produce your own lighting.

I hope that helps!

Q&A: Any tips and tricks for scaling down images without blurring in Photoshop?

Question by : Any tips and tricks for scaling down images without blurring in Photoshop?
I have an image that’s about 500px wide that I’ve scaled down to about 100px wide.

A part of the image is a newspaper. After scaling it more or less looks blurred. The overall images is a fan arrangement of magazines/newspapers.

Any tips or tricks on this, mateys?

This is the nature of raster graphics (which I can safely assume you’re dealing with). The more you reduce an image’s dimensions by scaling the image, the fewer pixels there are available to render the details of the image. The best you can do in this case without getting too deep is to apply a Sharpen filter. I prefer using Unsharp Mask because it gives greater control over the results.

How to put part of a picture onto a white background on photoshop?

Question by ASKaway: How to put part of a picture onto a white background on photoshop?
I have a picture of me but I do not want the background. I want to have the image of me with a white background. How is this possible on Adobe Photoshop? Thank you so much! :)

You can go the quick and simple way (but not necessarily the best) of using the paintbrush tool and coloring in the background with white. Or use the lasso tool, select the background area with it, hit backspace button and have that area be filled in with the background color (by default it’s white).

Or the way I do it is, use the pen tool (some knowledge of paths and anchor points helps) but basically its like connect the dots, just that you’re putting the dots and photoshop is putting in the lines to connect them for you. Then you go into the path palette (batched together with the layers palette), click ‘load path as a selection’, inverse the selection and add about 2px of feather both under the ‘Select’ menu. Then hit backspace or fill the selected area using the paintbrush. But this is just my way to be more seamless and not have it so obvious that it’s been cut from the background of an image. Hope it helps

The best place to start to your local library to get a copy of “Photoshop for Dummies”. It is well-written for beginners and will give you a good start.
